Spyware programs can accomplish a multitude of malicious tasks. Some of their deeds are simply annoying the users; others can become downright aggressive in nature.
Spyware can:
-
- Monitor your keystrokes for reporting purposes.
- Scan files located on your hard drive.
- Snoop through applications on your desktop.
- Install other spyware programs into your computer.
- Read your cookies.
- Steal credit card numbers, passwords, and other personal information.
- Change the default settings on your home page web browser.
- Mutate into a second generation of spyware thus making it more difficult to eradicate.
- Cause your computer to run slower.
- Deliver annoying pop up advertisements.
- Add advertising links to web pages for which the author does not get paid. Instead, payment is directed to the spyware programmer that changed the original affiliate’s settings.
- Provide the user with no uninstall option and places itself in unexpected or hidden places within your computer making it difficult to remove.
Examples of Spyware
Here are a few examples of commonly seen spyware programs:
(Please note that while researchers will often give names to spyware programs, they may not match the names the spyware-writers use.)
CoolWebSearch, a group of programs, that install through “holes” found in Internet Explorer. These programs direct traffic to advertisements on Web sites including coolwebsearch.com. This spyware nuisance displays pop-up ads, rewrites search engine results, and alters the computer host file to direct the Domain Name System (DNS) to look up preselected sites. A real destroyer.
Internet Optimizer (aka DyFuCa), likes to redirect Internet Explorer error pages to advertisements. When the user follows the broken link or enters an erroneous URL, a page of advertisements pop up.
180 Solutions reports extensive information to advertisers about the web sites which you visit. It also alters HTTP requests for affiliate advertisements linked from a web site. Therefore the 180 Solutions Company makes an unearned profit off of the click through advertisements they’ve altered.
HuntBar (aka WinTools) or Adware.Websearch, is distributed by Traffic Syndicate and is installed by ActiveX by downloading at affiliate websites or by advertisements displayed by other spyware programs. It’s a prime example of how spyware can install more spyware. These programs will add toolbars to Internet Explorer, track web browsing behavior, and display advertisements.

Have you ever received strange emails from unknown senders inviting you to click on a link to learn more? You have probably received an email with a phishing link.
What happens is that these emails are part of phishing schemes. Phishing generally means that someone sends you fake or bogus emails with bad links in them. These links invite you to click on their bogus sites (i.e. not government sites at all) and submit some of your personal (confidential) information: maybe your complete name, social security number, etc. Some emails even have spyware attachments on them.
Identity thieves, or thieves who focus on identity theft issues, send out thousands of fake emails almost on a regular basis, saying they’re representing government entities. So, be alert if you receive emails saying they’re from the Justice Department, Federal Trade Commission, Internal Revenue Service or other government agency or department. These emails may be trying to trick you.
Spyware is computer software that is installed stealthily on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer, without the user’s knowledge or consent.
One government department alone, the Treasury Department, reported receiving over 23,000 complaints about IRS-related phishing schemes since November 2005. Most involve hoax emails telling recipients that they have a pending tax refund and are under investigation. Do not click on links inside emails from government agencies.
Government agencies rarely communicate via email, and if they do, it’s in response to something you initiated most often. They communicate via postal mail.
Windows posts updates regularly, especially security patches. Make sure you download these or at least check monthly for updates. Mark your Outlook or other calendar and check regularly. So arm yourself: your computer and email for identity theft protection. Better safe then sorry!
Most agencies are listed on the web nowadays with contact information readily available. If you receive communications that you are unsure of, call the agency first to see if the emails are legitimate.
Do not click on or save attachments that come with government emails. Delete these files. Unfortunately, sometimes even the best security isn’t good enough. Computers are expensive, and it makes sense to protect your investment from anything that could harm it.

Like a virus, spyware is programmed to spy on your computer or your surfing habits. When the worst happens and your pc is infected by a major virus or deeply embedded spyware program you can loose everything on it. Though Spyware is somewhat similar to a computer virus, the focus is typically not to cause data loss.
Many unscrupulous spyware creators infect a computer by going after security holes in the Web browser or in other applications on the targeted computer.
Occasionally, owners of seriously infected systems end up re-installing their operating system or purchasing an entire new computer system because their existing system “has become too unreliable or slow”. The computer slows down to a crawl, overpowered by the many power-draining processes running on it. And the most frightening fact of all is that in studies home computers have at least 24 instances of spyware hiding on the computer system and causing problems not only for the user but the system itself.
Detection, quarantining and cleaning of the latest virus and spyware threats is already a number one priority. Most of the spyware out there requires a computer technician or a specialized program to remove them.
If you want to have lasting pleasure online then you should have some kind of adware spyware removal tool protecting your computer against adware, spyware, trojans, dialers and worms. Once spyware, adware, keyloggers, trojans and other malicious codes have installed themselves onto your computer, the consequences are seemingly endless. There are many software programs available designed to remove viruses, spyware, adware and other nasty gimmicks from your computer.
Spyware represents ordinary embedded software modules that track and gather different information about your activity during your work on PC, redirect you to various companies’ sites during your surfing the Internet, open advertising banners of every sort and kind, and perform a lot of other unapproved spy activity.
First off spyware and adware are software programs that are made with the intention of allowing individuals and companies to spy on your web browsing activities. If you are thinking of removing spyware without the help of a professional software company, and for free, you should take care to download and install programs that cancel out the threat of spyware from your computer for a long time.
If you regularly access the internet from your home or office computer and want to keep your information and surfing habits private then you need to install a spyware blocker. Make sure you protect your computer carefully from malware and all sorts of super adware, spyware or scumware and be sure not to risk reinfection. The spyware software is not even blocked by firewall programs, as user itself allows it, of-course, due to unawareness.
